How We Translate Bank Data

We believe that complex financial data should be accessible to everyone. Here is how we turn raw regulatory filings into plain English.

8.4/10

The Health Score

We combine ROA, ROE, and Equity ratios into one simple number. Anything over 8 indicates top-tier stability.

Consumer Safety

We flag banks with a history of regulatory intervention so you know when to be careful with uninsured deposits.

ROE = 12.5%

Plain English

We translate dense regulatory jargon into actionable, color-coded insights so you don't need a finance degree.

Chartered Banks vs. Community Banks vs. Holding Companies

Understanding the difference helps you know who you are actually doing business with. Most regular consumers work directly with the Chartered Bank or Community Bank, not the Holding Company.

Feature Chartered Bank Community Bank Bank Holding Company (BHC)
What it is The actual operational national/regional bank. A locally owned and operated bank. The FDIC defines community banks by assets under $10B, local ownership, and relationship-based lending. The parent corporation that owns or controls the bank.
Primary Function Takes deposits and issues direct loans on a massive scale. Relationship banking focused on local businesses and families. Holds shares of the bank. Doesn't usually deal with retail customers.
Authorization Granted a formal charter by a federal regulator (e.g., OCC). Chartered by a state regulator or the OCC. Incorporated as a standard parent corporation under state law.
Primary Regulator Regulated by the OCC and FDIC. Regulated by State Banking Authorities and FDIC. Regulated specifically by the Federal Reserve.
Real-World Example Bank of America, N.A. (holds deposits, physical branches). First State Bank (a local 3-branch town bank). Bank of America Corporation (owns the N.A. bank + Merrill).

Jargon Buster: Understanding Bank Health

We grade banks on a 10-point Health Score based on three core financial pillars. Here is what they actually mean:

ROA (Return on Assets)

Profitability: Shows how efficiently a bank uses its assets (loans, investments) to generate profit. A healthy bank aims for > 1.0%.

ROE (Return on Equity)

Shareholder Value: Measures the profit generated with the money shareholders have invested. A healthy bank aims for > 10.0%.

Capital Cushion (Eq/Assets)

Safety Net: The ratio of Equity to Assets. It shows how much losses a bank can absorb before failing. Regulators prefer this > 9.0%.
